ViewSonic VG170m 17" monitor review

The ViewSonic VG170m is the latest 16ms response time 17" monitor from ViewSonic. With an identical panel to other 17" LCDs from the likes of Hitachi the ViewSonic VG170m doesn't do much to separate itself from the pack.

With only analog input and basic design only price can save this 17" LCD monitor.

ViewSonic VG170m not a bad 17" LCD computer monitor

View sonic has a great reputation for producing both basic and high end LCD computer monitors. This 17" LCD is part of the new batch of fast response time monitors. With a response time of 16ms this monitor would be ideal for games. The sharp bright panel would also be usful in the office.

If your looking for a high performance monitor then it would be wise to go for one of the new types like the ViewSonic VG170m.

Having said that there may be better deals out there. The major problem with this monitor is that it only has an analog input. This means if you can never connect this monitor up digitally. Digital connectors do offer some benefits and it's starting to become really commont for LCD computer monitors to support them.

ViewSonic VG170m 17" LCD monitor specifications:

  • 16ms response time
  • Normal VGA (D-sub) connector only
  • Contrast ratio 450:1
  • Brightness of 260cd/mē
  • 17" 1280 by 1024 native resolution

The OSD menu is not very convenient. For instance, even when you set the parameters manually, you are never shown what the brightness and contrast values are. You have to do it all by guesswork. This is a pity when you think how much these two settings influence the success of calibration.

The base folds right up against the panel which is great if you want to mount the panel on a wall. Apart from this ingenious design the rest of the ViewSonic VG170m is less clever. It has a wide bezel which I personally don't prefer and the the design is also quick a bit thicker than most other 17" LCDs.

My conclusion on the ViewSonic VG170m 17" LCD monitor

Reasonable performance and low 17ms response make this monitor a suitable choice for gamers. It is also quite reasonably priced.

It's difficult to give you a strong opinion either way. If you looking for the cheapest possible 16ms 17" LCD then this might be your best choice but for me the lack of a DVI input makes me think of better choices from Hitachi.
