Samsung 172T 17" LCD Monitor Review

Samsung 172T 17" LCD is a solid choice for home or office use. This LCD computer monitor currently sits in the LCD sweet spot with larger sized monitors costing disproportionately more.

Good performance, good price

Samsung 172T 17" LCD is a workhorse that's good value for money

This 17" LCD monitor was designed with the office and not the gamer in mind. The problem for gamers is this Samsung has a slow response rate of 24ms. This will make action games look a little blurry when there's lots of movement on the screen.

I personally am not fond of thick bezel designs so the look didn't impress either.

Another criticism is that the Samsung 172T 17" LCD has an external power adaptor. This makes more clutter around your desk and one more item to look after. However some people may like the external power adapter because it has allowed Samsung to create a very thin design that will take up a minimum of room on your desk.

Samsung 172T 17" LCD monitor specifications:

  • 24ms response time
  • DVI and normal VGA (D-sub) connector
  • Contrast ratio 500:1
  • Brightness of 250 cd/m2
  • 17" 1280 by 1024 native resolution

It's nice to see that you get a DVI and analog connector so you get the option to use your monitor with an all digital interface.

My conclusion on the Samsung 172T 17" LCD monitor

For the money you will be hard pressed to find a better 17" display. Hitachi offers a model with a faster response time but at a high [price point.

Samsung 172T 17" LCD outperforms Viewsonics offerings at the same price and would be a great display for office work. However gamers be warned this LCD computer monitor was not designed with you in mind. If you're after a 17" LCD take a look at Hitachi's offering also reviewed on this site.
